When we consider the rightness or wrongness of any federal government program or agency the discussion of its “rightness” must always begin with the question of authority. Does the federal government have the authority to do this thing in the first place?

It looks like the House debate on how to replace Obamacare is open again, with pressure mounting on conservative members to support the legislation proposed by House Speaker Paul Ryan. Before members rush ahead, however, given the current pause in the bill’s passage, this appears an opportune moment to note a few of the major shortcomings in the legislation’s current iteration, and potential changes that would improve it dramatically. Get rid of the 30 percent premium hike for 12 months for those whose insurance lapses 63 days. The House-proposed legislation included this new mandate that looks too much like the individual mandate and will be used by the left and the right to hammer members for raising premium rates, particularly on the uninsured. The Freedom Caucus members are today’s abolitionists. They see, rightly, how far America has drifted from its blueprint of freedom, and the grave consequences of this fiscally, morally and existentially.

Anybody who even occasionally gets take-out from any fast food chain will immediately get that story, because about a third of the time you don’t get what you order, even if the ticket is correct and they repeat it back to you. What’s more, when you discover the order isn’t correct – often after you arrive at home – you drive back and go in to get the order corrected, and are typically met with either a mild disinterest or outright hostility.

This week, we learned that President Donald Trump’s “conservative” “pro-life” judicial nominee believes the “right” to murder your own child in the womb is “the law of the land,” and so is the “right” to counterfeit marriage, and that illegal aliens are “undocumented immigrants.” If that’s “conservative” and “pro-life,” then I guess I’m not a conservative.

Numerous times, President Donald Trump has said in his opinion the Republicans should let Obamacare alone for a year or two. Let it implode (as it was designed to do) while the Democrats still own it.

This weeks’ Good, Bad and Ugly brings us a look at some modest spending cuts in some of the right places, as well as a sellout of the American people when it comes to repealing ObamaCare.

“Repeal and Replace”? How about just “Repeal,” and if you absolutely have to, try to find some way to help that 7 or 11 or 30 million Americans who actually need help with health insurance…and leave the rest of us to hell alone?!

It raises an obvious question: If the Republican legislative plan to repeal Obamacare is a “market-based” approach to health care that will bring down costs, why do private insurance policies need to be subsidized?

“We promised the American people we would drain the swamp and end business as usual in Washington,” said Utah Sen. Mike Lee. “This bill does not do that.” Worse yet, over the last three major national elections beginning in 2010, Republicans have won congressional races across the country based on the promise to repeal Obamacare with a market-based, non-government-run solution.
