The Ruse Behind the Curtain

Veronica_FayeOnly a few generations ago, Americans were anchored in concrete ethics, felt the need to instruct their posterity in biblical morality, and understood the value of the founding fathers’ labors. Lamentably, our cultures values and system of thought have drastically changed. Americans now abhor absolute ethical standards, public education now has postmodern relativism as the teaching standard, and citizens are forfeiting their role as the people in government. How did our country digress? The answer to this originates in an insidious train of thought that began over one hundred and fifty years ago. Evolutionary theory has drastically changed modern culture in many aspects. Not only has it affected origins, but it has altered most American’s views on morality, education, and government. It has caused Americans to blindly listen to secular humanists beckoning them to “follow the yellow brick road” (Fleming). The greatest obstacle that threatens Christians today is evolutionary philosophy applied to numerous areas within culture.

After origins, morality is the next largest area to drastically change by the ideals of evolution. “Evolution replaces the value of moral behavior with the concept of survival of the fittest. It says that moral (and immoral) behavior is an evolutionary selected trait that improves the survivability of the species” (Deem). The most obvious example of this pertains to the issue of life. Abortion and euthanasia are perfectly acceptable according to evolution because these acts abolish the less evolved, and simply put Darwin’s ideal of survival of the fittest into action (Darwin). This thought process also applies to murder, rape, theft, the redefining of marriage and any other immoral behavior. It comes as no surprise that ethical standards have depreciated, since evolution teaches that life is the result of evolved scum. Evolutionary thought has usurped the role of the Ten Commandments in American society as what is paramount. Just like the tin man from The Wizard of Oz, Americans have gone looking for a heart, or morals, in the mystical “Emerald City” of evolution (Fleming).

Today every subject in American public schools is tainted by the worldview of evolution, not just biology class. Amidst numerous school shootings, increased childhood depression, and high suicide rates in students, school officials and parents alike are wondering what has caused these problems. After Columbine, Representative Tom DeLay commented that the tragedy happened “because our school systems teach our children that they are nothing but glorified apes who have evolutionized out of some primordial mud” (Krauss). Evidence of this mentality can be further seen in a quote from a recent school shooter from Finland, “I am prepared to fight and die for my cause. I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces to the human race and failures of natural selection” (Torma). Students in schools are unknowingly taught the philosophy of secular humanism; that everyone can be right, and that morality is whatever they choose it to be. This is only furthering the muddled view of ethics which evolutionary philosophy has established by instructing young scholars that evolution is the only intelligent option. History has been both devalued and revised, because those who lived before us are considered less evolved. Modern art is whatever the beholder thinks it to be. Students in mathematics are taught to value methodology over absolutes. In science class, where children should be learning the scientific method, they instead are taught they came from scum and their ancestors are apes. With the lack of concrete rules and order in even the most basic subjects, it should be no wonder why American public education is in such a chaotic state. Why did we allow education to become a brainless scarecrow (Fleming)?

Finally, even the United States government has been altered by evolutionary philosophy. Throughout the years, legislating from the bench and viewing the Constitution as a living document have become acceptable. However these things would have been unheard of at the founding of this country. The Constitution may be amended, but it is not a living document. Judges have the authority to decide cases, but according to Article 1, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution, legislative powers are exclusively given to Congress (The Constitution of the United States of America). Unconstitutional bench legislation has become commonplace. “Justice Benjamin Cardozo declared, ‘I take judge-made law as one of the existing realities of life.’ Chief Justice Evan Hughes wrote, ‘The Constitution is what the judges say it is.’ Chief Justice Earl Warren expanded the concept to its full extent. He wrote, ‘The Constitution must draw its meaning from the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society’” (Creation Worldview Ministries). Judges who overstep their bounds by legislating from the bench must be held accountable. These malleable ideas are a continuation of evolutionary thinking applied to government. Christians have become like the “cowardly lion” and no longer have the courage to stand up to the government’s criminal behavior (Fleming).

Wizard_Oz_CurtainReversing the damage done to morality, education, and government by evolutionary philosophy is a daunting, yet necessary task. The morality of evolutionary philosophy is a huge step backward from the biblical morals on which our country was founded. The mayhem in American schools paints a bleak future for coming generations without this necessary change. Unconstitutional ideas that are now accepted as legal allow government officials to further the chaotic downward spiral of this nation. At the end of the road we find that amid the alleged splendor and greatness, evolution is really just a ruse behind the curtain of which we should pay no attention (Fleming). We, as Christians, need to be emboldened to reestablish biblical order and concrete values to the United States in order to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” (The Constitution of the United States of America). Christians should be on guard and as it says in Colossians 2:8, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ” (Holy Bible: Col. 2:8 ESV). Evolutionary philosophy is the greatest impediment to American Christians today.

    Very well said, though it makes the common mistake of accepting the phrase “evolutionary theory,” when (in actual scientific terminology) it only qualifies as a “hypothesis.”

    Bravo Veronica! The fact that you, as a high school student, have written such an articulate description of American society’s “digression” gives me real hope for your generation. I was born near the end of World War 2, so I’ve lived through dramatic cultural change that I could never have imagined when I was your age. I still find it hard to comprehend that the Supreme Court next week will hear arguments to decide on the definition of marriage — something God already has done. But that’s what happens when governments turn their backs on God and then try to fill in the vacuum they’ve created.

    However, I do see some positive signs that the pendulum is beginning to swing back toward godliness, responsibility and sanity. Many credible scientists are discrediting evolutionary philosophy. Evidence is mounting in many scientific fields. But much work remains undone in the matter of restoring sound doctrine to education in America. As I said before, young people like you give me hope. Never stop insisting on the truth. And expose the lies whenever you can! God bless you!
