The Look and the Sound of Freedom

Though I’ve been out of the Air Force for about 17 years now (gosh, time flies!), I try to stay connected to nearby Ellsworth Air Force base. I still know a number of the flight crew and ground personnel out there. They work hard to protect our country.

Below are some pictures taken recently by Airman 1st Class Zachary Hada of the B-1 bomber.

The first one is interesting, with the double-lightning bolts in the background (probably over the Black Hills) as the B-1 sits parked by the hangers. I’ve spent a few 12+ hour evenings walking around a some of those nuke-laden B-1s during exercises and such, though it was often when the temperature was 30 below. I once had the dubious honor of guarding one when President George H.W. Bush brought American nuclear forces off alert at the end of the Cold War.

The second and third show the power of this large bird as she goes airborne.  When I used to live in Box Elder, below the south end of the runway, we used to call the noise these jets make on takeoff “the sound of freedom.”  Though annoying at times, it was a reminder that America has the strength to maintain our freedom, even against some very determined enemies.

May God grant that this will always be the case.
