Cowardice asks the question, ‘Is it safe?’ Expediency asks the question, ‘Is it politic?’ But conscience asks the question, ‘Is it right?’ And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but because conscience tells one it is right. — Martin Luther King Jr.

The Republican Crony Capitalism Problem

June 15, 2014   ·   By   ·   0 Comments

businessCongressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) recently spoke with the Wall Street Journal about the problem the Republican Party has with “crony capitalism.”

Crony capitalism isn’t really capitalism at all, but rather is more akin to a benevolent fascism where politicians protect and reward their friends and donors in the business community for the financial support of those friends and donors. They typically reward those friends and donors with favorable legislation, tax breaks, exceptions to laws that other business must obey, etc.

In short, crony capitalism has the appearance of support for the free market, but is in reality just plain ole’ corruption. It has much less to do with a “free” free market and more to do with illegitimate, incestuous (and nest-feathering) ties between government and business.

It is also a key engine in protecting incumbents in office against new and healthy competition, and usually does so at the taxpayer’s expense-both the expense of their tax dollars and their freedom.

Government best supports the free market by keeping taxes and regulation low, and staying out of the way of business enterprise. Government should not be picking winners and losers in the free market-rewarding some and punishing others.

That is the major problem the GOP has with crony capitalism here in my state, and at the national level.

And it has to stop, if the Republican Party is to continue to be a vibrant party…and if America is to continue to be a vibrant nation.

On Course to Never Pay Off National Debt

Robert Romano

We’re more likely to default on our national debt than to ever pay it off. The national debt has increased every single year since 1958 to its current level. Who really believes that trend will be reversed?

Pastors Resist Houston Mayor’s Power Grab

Houston is home to one of NASA's most sophisticated space centers -- but even it would have trouble finding signs of intelligence in the local Mayor's office. The city's highest official is blowing past the First Amendment at warp speed -- and lighting a political powder keg in the process.

Supreme Court

No To Graven Images

David Whitney

This past Monday the Supreme Court, in typical fashion, issued its decree for the destruction of God's Holy Institution of marriage in America. By refusing a writ of certiorari, it condemned five more States immediately, and potentially all the remaining States in the union, to have sodomite un-marriage forced upon them. What is very significant in this is that this would be against the plain statements of those State Constitutions as well as State law, not to mention six thousand years of human history.

Tea Party Express Whores Itself to RINO Establishment

Bob Ellis

We've come to a very sad and pathetic place in America and South Dakota, these days. There once was a time, not too long ago, when you could count on certain people and groups to do the right thing and hold the line against what was wrong. Not anymore.

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the party over to the so-called moderates wouldn't make any sense at all." - Ronald Reagan, Nov. 10, 1964
