Rand Paul Pandering to the Illegal Immigration Crowd

More evidence that Rand Paul has gone over to the dark side and is now working against conservative priorities.

While Paul opposed the comprehensive immigration reform package in the Senate last year, he has indicated his support for other approaches to reform.

He said one way to appeal to Latino voters is by ensuring that “Mrs. Garcia’s nephew is not going to be sent home to Mexico” because “everybody, even those who are here legally, know somebody who is here who doesn’t have the proper visa.”

“The other thing to acknowledge is, it’s not always the individual’s fault,” he said, referring to those who are undocumented. “Sometimes it’s a child who has no control over this. But sometimes it’s also someone who came here and tried to use our system.”

“We as conservatives talk a lot about big government and how [it] never seems to work. We’re always talking about Obamacare now, how big government is a disaster…. Well, guess what? Big government is not very good with the visa system, either. Part of the problem is not the fault of those who are coming to this country and try to use it, part of the problem is big government,” he added.

Guess what? I think everybody knows someone who has been on the wrong side of (non-immigration related) law.  Does that mean we excuse theft, because we know someone who stole something?  Does that mean we excuse assault, because we know someone who assaulted a person?  Does that mean we excuse drunk driving because we know someone who has driven drunk?

Spare me.

And yes, adults who break immigration law and drag their children into their lawbreaking do their children a disservice. If a family breaks into an unoccupied building (trespassing), when they’re caught, should we allow the children to remain in the building?  Or maybe just ignore the crime altogether because, hey, they have children?

When are we going to grow up and hold people accountable?

It is unfortunate when children get caught in the middle by their parents bad choices. Unfortunately, it happens all the time, e.g. children who suffer financially because the parents embezzled money, children who suffer because their parents are druggies, etc. It’s extremely unfortunate, but we don’t leave the embezzled money because the embezzler has children.

Perhaps more prospective illegal aliens might think twice about breaking our laws if it was clear to them from the start that THEY would be held accountable for what THEY do to their children. In other words, if they really care about their children (not to mention our laws), maybe they’ll think twice before putting their children in this position.

The one thing Paul did get right was the fact that our visa and immigration system overall needs a lot of improvement. THAT is where a conservative can agree to some improvements–NOT ignoring the law. We can increase visa quotas, speed up the process of immigration and naturalization, and hire more people to get it done.

While we’re at it, we can hire more border patrols, as well as more people to catch, process and deport those who have broken our immigration laws.

I once thought Rand Paul would make a good presidential candidate; he seemed to be pretty conservative across the board, and exhibited none of the nuttiness of his father.

Now, however, he seems to have jumped on the bandwagon of pandering to liberals and liberalism.

God knows we’ve had way too much of that already. We don’t need any more.
