GOP, American and Christian Values: Marriage and Family

marriageAs the lines between right and wrong grow more and more blurry from “mainstream” media propaganda and wolves-in-sheep’s-clothing among those who should know better, sometimes we have to take the time to examine where our values come from and what they really mean. Those who want to subvert traditional values will often try to tell us that these values really aren’t associated with the particular groups we belong to; if we don’t feel a sense of ownership of these values, they thing we will more easily relinquish them.

As amazing as it would have seemed 30 years ago or even 20 years ago, some are telling us that values such as marriage, family, and sexual responsibility are not really “Republican values,” and even that such notions are not Christian in nature.  Leftists are very good at selling lies–not so much because their lies are ingenious, but because they sell them with such audacious confidence and proclaim them so loudly, they frequently intimidate the uninformed into conformity.

As we have already done with the issues of illegal immigration and limited government, let us now examine marriage and family values to determine if they meet the criteria of Republican values, American values, and Christian values.

Republican Values

The last published South Dakota GOP platform states the following concerning marriage and family:

The South Dakota Republican Party recognizes the family as the central core of society and the foundation of our state and nation, and supports the family as it nurtures the spiritual growth that fosters generosity of spirit and responsible citizenship.

The South Dakota Republican Party believes that marriage is the union of one man and one woman and must never be redefined to include civil unions of same-sex couples, or groups of individuals. To defend the sanctity of marriage, we support the passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment and appropriate South Dakota laws.

The South Dakota GOP platform also supports healthy families by promoting sexual responsibility, i.e. maintaining the importance and sanctity of human sexuality as proper only within marriage.

The South Dakota Republican Party supports sex education classes that include instruction to students on the social, psychological and health gains to be realized by abstinence from sexual activity until marriage. No state-sponsored sex education should glamorize or support adolescent sexual activity to students.

Further, the official Republican position is not to assume “they’re just going to do it anyway” and shoot for the lowest common denominator.  “Republicans’ who facilitate and cater to the kind of sexualized material put out by Planned Parenthood and similar organizations are not upholding the GOP platform and representing GOP values.

The 2008 national Republican platform states:

Because our children’s future is best preserved within the traditional understanding of marriage, we call for a constitutional amendment that fully protects marriage as a union of a man and a woman, so that judges cannot make other arrangements equivalent to it. In the absence of a national amendment, we support the right of the people of the various states to affirm traditional marriage through state initiatives.

Republicans recognize the importance of having in the home a father and a mother who are married. The two-parent family still provides the best environment of stability, discipline, responsibility, and character. Children in homes without fathers are more likely to commit a crime, drop out of school, become violent, become teen parents, use illegal drugs, become mired in poverty, or have emotional or behavioral problems. We support the courageous efforts of single-parent families to provide a stable home for their children. Children are our nation’s most precious resource. We also salute and support the efforts of foster and adoptive families.

Republicans have been at the forefront of protecting traditional marriage laws, both in the states and in Congress. A Republican Congress enacted the Defense of Marriage Act, affirming the right of states not to recognize same-sex “marriages” licensed in other states. Unbelievably, the Democratic Party has now pledged to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which would subject every state to the redefinition of marriage by a judge without ever allowing the people to vote on the matter. We also urge Congress to use its Article III, Section 2 power to prevent activist federal judges from imposing upon the rest of the nation the judicial activism in Massachusetts and California. We also encourage states to review their marriage and divorce laws in order to strengthen marriage.

As the family is our basic unit of society, we oppose initiatives to erode parental rights.

It is clear that marriage and family are Republican values, considered to be of vital importance to the health and welfare of our nation, although some like to wear the Republican brand while undermining marriage.

American Values

The U.S. Constitution states nothing about marriage.  Like so many things, marriage does not fall within the purview of government to distort or change the meaning. The state has a very compelling interest in protecting and preserving the institute of marriage, but marriage is a fundamental human institution, based on male and female sexuality, which transcends governments and nations. Indeed, a nation that does not safeguard such a fundamental building block of ordered society will not remain an intact nation indefinitely.

Public policy which promotes or allows the counterfeiting of marriage by couples who fail to meet the most basic criteria for marriage understood throughout human history (that a man and a woman are needed to form a marriage) is contrary to the stability of society, and undermines the balanced environment developing children need when growing up. To intentionally rob a child of either a mother or a father, and to teach them that either men or women are unnecessary or maybe even undesirable, is a reprehensible act.As previously noted, strong marriages and families also helps prevent poverty, suffering, and additional expenses to the American taxpayer.  The personal and societal damage wrought by the sexual irresponsibility of heterosexuals is far more than enough; it should not be used as an excuse to allow more irresponsibility, but should instead serve as a warning that we need to backtrack and clean up our act. Our children deserve better…and so does the American taxpayer.

In the end, there is simply no practical, scientific or legal basis for allowing the counterfeiting of marriage. Two men or two women having sex has no scientific legitimacy, no practical outcome, and provides no benefit whatsoever to any society.

Allowing unnatural sexual practices to be officially recognized as legitimate is leading to unprecedented assaults on the freedoms of businesses and religious organizations.  It is a truth that two diametrically opposed value systems cannot peacefully coexist; one will necessarily dominate the other.  This axiom is being lived out in Europe, Canada, and even in parts of the United States already, as the freedoms of employers, businesses and religious organizations topple in the face of state-sanctioned sexual anarchy. These allowances are also mere stepping-stones to even more heinous behaviors; the way we’re going, what is unthinkable today is a “right” tomorrow.

From the beginning of our nation, the family has been recognized as critical to the success of the community and society at large. Men and women are needed to commit to one another in marriage to create the next generation of any society.  Their marital commitment to one another is needed to ensure a stable, reliable, and balanced home where not only the children’s material needs are met, but also the individual and interdependent behaviors of men and women are modeled to developing children in the home.  We can try to hide the truth, and we can even declare war on the truth, but in the end, it is inescapable.

Christian Values

The Bible lays out God’s design for human sexuality in Genesis 2:24, when God created the first man and woman: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”

The Bible repeatedly illustrates God’s disapproval of homosexual behavior as a perversion of his design in many places including Genesis 19, Leviticus 18:22 where he says, “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable,” Leviticus 20:13 where God says, “‘If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable,” and Judges 19.

God’s design for human sexuality is again affirmed, as is his disapproval of homosexual behavior, in the New Testament.  In Mark 10:6-8 Jesus reminds us, “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one.” Romans 1:26-27 says, says “Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” 1 Corinthians 6:9 says, among other habitual sins, homosexuals “will not inherit the kingdom of God,” and 1 Timothy 1:10 also condemns the practice of homosexuality.

For all the practical as well as moral reasons that we have already examined here, God created marriage and family to be formed by a man and a woman in a life-long commitment. Obviously, marriage and family as God intended them are Christian values.
