Vietnam Vet’s Unit Wiped Out in Mekong Delta
On Saturday, October 8, Rapid City architect Richard J. McConnell will visually speak about his Vietnam War experiences as a riverine lieutenant in the Mekong Delta with the US Army’s 9th Infantry Division and 86th Engineer Battalion. Wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade at Camp Viking in 1969, he was airlifted to Japan.
Two weeks later, he learned that all other members of his unit, about 30, had been ambushed and killed.
Sponsored by the Black Hills Veterans Writing Group, the free event will take place at Ellsworth Air Force Base’s South Dakota Air and Space Museum (I-90 Exit 67B), starting at 9 am.
