SOS: Speaking of Seniors - Saved Client $360
In September 2015, a client sent me her medical bill for $360. She wanted to know why she owed it. She had both Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy through this insurance agency. The client is from East Chicago, Indiana.
I investigated the bill and wrote two letters to prod the medical service provider to correct and refile the claim. The $360 bill was caused because the doctor’s office filed the claim incorrectly as an “annual wellness” visit. Instead, it should have been filed as a “welcome to Medicare” visit.
In my second letter to the doctor’s office, I cited exactly why the claim was filed incorrectly, how it should have been filed, and flatly stated that the only reason the bill had a $360 balance was because of the erroneous filing.
Finally, our client got a letter from the medical service provider that admitted the error, reported that the error was corrected, and stated that our client OWED NOTHING. If I had not helped this client, she would have paid $360 that she really did not owe.
The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency distinguishes itself by “going the extra mile” for our clients. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not?
