SOS: Speaking of Seniors - Helping a Griffith Client
Twice in June I helped a client from Griffith, Indiana. She received a bill that had a balance due. She wanted to know why because she has both Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy through our insurance agency.
The first papers that she brought to my office did not give a complete story of the bill from a local hospital. So, on June 9, I wrote a letter to the hospital asking for more complete information about the bill. On June 23, our client brought the hospital’s response.
I compared the more detailed bill to the bill that was sent to our client previously, to the Medicare Summary Notice that our client received from Medicare, and to the Explanation of Benefits from the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company. I found the problem.
The hospital failed to file the claim with Medicare with all the services that it listed on the bill to the client. That threw the math about the claim “off”. Here is part of the letter that I sent to the hospital.

Our senior citizen client should not be forced to pay one penny more than the proper and legal amount of any balance, if any exists, just because someone else made a mistake. Please, take steps to either drop this balance sought or refile the claim correctly for an adjustment to the figures.

The help that I gave to this senior citizen client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high level of service to senior citizens? If not, why not?
