South Dakota Legislative Billwatch, Feb. 9, 2016

Capitol_rotundaToday, the South Dakota Legislature will be examining a bill to prohibit hydraulic fracturing in HB 1197.  Hydraulic fracturing has been so wildly successful in other states, now liberals want to make sure we don’t enjoy any of that energy or economic success here in South Dakota. The bill is scheduled to be considered in the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee this morning.

HB 1212, scheduled for the House Health and Human Services Committee, deals with requirements for pregnancy help centers.  The bill is sponsored by several pro-life legislators, so the bill should only benefit pregnancy resource centers in helping pregnant women and their children…unless liberals are successfully able to hijack it, which one never should take for granted in our “Republican” supermajority legislature.

The Senate Judiciary committee will be looking for more state control of refugee resettlement in SB 119. A similar bill, HB 1158 , was tabled yesterday in the House State Affairs Committee.

SJR 1 would propose a constitutional amendment to provide that the fundamental right of state citizens to bear arms cannot be infringed and is subject to strict scrutiny.

I am also including in today’s billwatch installment some bills scheduled for consideration a couple of days out, because of the monumental importance of some of these, particularly the attempt to repeal the death penalty in South Dakota in SB 94.

The death penalty is absolutely necessary in a civilized society, both to obtain justice for someone whose life was deliberately robbed from them, and to deter other such crimes in society.  And yes, despite what lying liberals try to tell you, the death penalty DOES deter murder. Multiple studies prove it, even some conducted by (former) death penalty opponents.

Ultimately, this would affect not only South Dakota, but if it is repealed here, that will add impetus to repeal in other states, thus putting innocent citizens at risk in those states as well. So we would not only jeopardize citizens in our own state–as well as thwart justice in our own state–but our actions could jeopardize the safety of citizens in other states that might be misguided into following our bad example.

You can read some information about the multiple reasons we must maintain the death penalty for murder in South Dakota, and in our nation, here, here and here. You can also read about last year’s efforts to repeal the death penalty here and here.

Many good people become beguiled on this subject, so if you’re going to write to your legislator about ANYTHING this session, this would be the bill to do it for.
