SD_HouseThese are some of the important bills being considered in the South Dakota Legislature today.

SB 73 involves an overhaul of the juvenile justice system. It has already passed the Senate 35-0 and now goes before the House State Affairs Committee.

SB 162 would permit legislators to carry a concealed firearm in the state capitol building under certain conditions. This bill, offered by several good legislators, is similar to one that the RINOs played around with and then killed last year. In this day and age, it is easy to envision legislators becoming the target of some nut job with a beef, and having been in the capitol many times, there isn’t a whole lot in the way of protective presence there. A wacko could do a whole lot of damage before armed authorities could deal with the situation.

HB 1069 seeks to limit the authority of delegates to a proposed Article V convention. This would be an absolute necessity in the event of an Article V convention, though I don’t know if a fine (which undoubtedly would be paid by some Leftist group if a delegate were enticed to betray the people of his state) is enough; a couple of years ago, a criminal penalty was included in the bill, and I think that has more teeth.  Still, even with such a restriction, an Article V convention would be fraught with dangers to freedom and a risky proposition. This bill has already passed the House 38-31, as well as the Senate State affairs 8-0, so now it is scheduled to be considered by the full Senate.

HB 1161 seeks to limit the authority of the South Dakota High School Activities Association, which often has a liberal bent, to push the homosexual agenda in schools. The bill says “the association may not establish policy relating to sexuality or gender identity, other than the basic distinction between the male and female high school activities.”  It’s pretty simple: if you were born with a penis, you’re a male, and if you were born with a vagina, you’re a female. Problems dealing with sexuality are best dealt with at home, and public educators and government officials have no business encouraging confused children suffering from delusions about their sex.  If anything, government officials should be encouraging people to adjust to reality, not humoring them in their mental problems.
