As the First Amendment Pendulum Swings

This last week in a 5-4 ruling, New York State’s Court of Appeals voted to knock down an earlier decision which would have required Fox News reporter, Jana Winter, to appear in front of Arapahoe County District Court in Colorado to disclose the source who gave her information about a notebook that the Aurora Theater gunman, James Holmes, gave to his psychiatrist just prior to the shooting. Winter said that she would go to jail before revealing such information to a judge.

Missing the Mark

I swear, being an average American can often bring unbiased approaches if some common sense is part of the mix. I mean, what’s with this “cure all” associated with a Constitutional Convention being held at the State level? Excuse me but whether at the State or Federal levels, politicians are still politicians. Or to put it in simpler terms, if State legislators are more apt to be trusted, how many State budgets run in the red? So how is it that these are the bumpkins who supposedly will act as our cavalry to the rescue?

A recent report from a Chilean consulting firm, Dictuc, indicates that private accounts in Chile payout retirement income equal to 87 percent of what workers were earning before retirement. Today’s Social Security benefits, even forgetting about the upcoming shortfalls, don’t match 50 percent of pre-retirement income.
