The South Dakota Legislature is considering several bills that, if successful, could end up resulting in a Constitutional Convention. While it is commendable that our state elected representatives are seeking to deal with our nation’s radically out-of-control spending in a constitutionally correct manner (too many these days simply ignore the Constitution when they find it inconvenient), there are some serious hazards to taking the constitutional convention approach.

Dr. Benjamin Carson, a black pediatric neurosurgeon with Johns Hopkins Hospital, gave a stunning speech at Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast. It was stunning not so much for providing information we’d never heard before, but because he told the simple and un-sugared truth while standing only a few feet away from President Barack Obama.

The Republican Party was founded in 1854 to address one great blot on the nation’s founding legacy: the existence of slavery in a nation founded under the ideal of freedom under God. But, as longshoreman philosopher Eric Hoffer once observed, “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.”
