NewsBusters provides some very important information regarding some manufactured “polls” being touted by the Leftists at CBS News and other “mainstream” media outlets.
CBS asked Catholics if they approved of President Obama’s ObamaCare policy to force religious institutions to pay for goods and services (contraceptives and abortifacients) they consider morally objectionable, in violation of Article 1 Section 8 and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. And CBS found out that 61% of Catholics approve of this.
Actually, that isn’t what CBS asked Catholics. This is what CBS asked them:
“What about for religiously-affiliated employers, such as a hospital or university? Do you support or oppose a recent federal requirement that their health insurance plans cover the full cost of birth control for their female employees?”
What is asked and how it is asked makes all the difference in the answers you will receive to a question. Ask a question that leaves out critical contextual information that can affect the opinion of the person queried, and you will get a different result than you would if that information were included. You will also get a different answer if false or misleading information is included, or if “leading” tones or inflection is used in a verbal question. Some people may not realize this, but someone who understands language can manipulate the responses of many people, if they so desire.
The “mainstream” media has for decades proven over and over that they “so desire” to not merely report public opinion, but to mold public opinion, to shape it and direct it. And they are good at it, especially in a mentally anemic culture like ours.
After decades of being dumbed-down by our pathetic public education system, most people lack the mental and informational tools with which to develop an informed opinion about much of anything–and the “mainstream” media knows that, and takes advantage of it with carefully worded “polls” at every opportunity.
Most people these days are wrapped up in who’s on American Idol, or what’s going on with Survivor: Third Moon of Jupiter and such intellectually bankrupt fare. They have little understanding of our history and cultural foundations, and even less inclination to find out more. Unless information is laid out in front of them, most people are unwilling or incapable of coming to grips with the most salient points of any issue. What’s more, they are easy prey for misinformation…or a lack of information.
Even if we assume these carefully crafted “results” actually do reflect the real and informed opinions of most Catholics…so what? The last time I checked, truth was not determined by poll results, nor was right and wrong. It wouldn’t matter of 100% of Catholics polled believed Catholic institutions should pay for goods and services they find morally objectionable; it would still be a violation of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and our God-given right of conscience.
What these idiotic questions (purposefully) don’t consider is the fact that even if 100% of polled Catholics use contraceptives (and even if 100% of them have abortions, for that matter), what matters is the opinion of those being forced to pay for a product or service they consider morally objectionable. (Keep in mind there are a number of Protestants who don’t believe in contraceptives, and more than a few that don’t believe in abortion.)
In other words, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks if an employer morally objects to paying for such goods and services. If an employee wants contraceptives or an abortion, they have the freedom to go buy it for themselves. Further, if they are so inclined to have someone else pay for it for them, they have the freedom to leave that job and seek employment at a place that will provide them all the contraceptives and abortions they can consume.
But Obama and his fellow Marxists aren’t interested in freedom–that of the employer or the individual. They are, in typical Marxist fashion, using the power of government to force free people to do what they dictate.
CBS, being a Leftist propaganda outlet masquerading as a “news” outlet, is of course immensely down with the Marxist approach to “freedom.” That’s why they didn’t bother to ask the question the way Pew did:
“Should religiously-affiliated institutions that object to the use of contraceptives be given an exemption from this rule, or should they be required to cover contraceptives like other employers?”
Once the Catholic being surveyed was supplied with the information concerning what’s at stake (religious freedom), the results were pretty much a polar opposite. The poll found 55% of Catholics opposed the policy, and Catholics who are serious enough about their faith to attend Mass at least once a week, it rose to 63% opposition.
Rasmussen received similar results (65% opposition) after laying out the relevant information in front of the American Idol Generation:
“The requirement to provide contraceptives for women violates deeply held beliefs of some churches and religious organizations. If providing such coverage violates the beliefs of a church or religious organization, should the government still require them to provide coverage for contraceptives?”
So why does this matter? Because the President of the United States and the “mainstream” media (the institution entrusted to bring objective and reliable information to the American people so they can properly maintenance our “government of the people, by the people, and for the people”) are working in tandem to deliberately mislead the American people and perpetrate the theft of the “first freedom” of the American people, the God-given right to exercise freedom of religious expression.
As if there could be any reasonable doubt after what the U.S. Constitution tells us, consider these words from the Founders:
The real object of the amendment was, not to countenance, much less to advance Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among Christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to an hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government. It thus cut off the means of religious persecution, (the vice and pest of former ages,) and of the subversion of the rights of conscience in matters of religion, which had been trampled upon almost from the days of the Apostles to the present age. – Justice Joseph Story
No provision in our Constitution ought to be dearer to man than that which protects the rights of conscience. – Thomas Jefferson
Consciences of men are not the objects of human legislation. – New Jersey Governor William Livingston, signer of the U.S. Constitution
It is inconsistent with the spirit of our laws and Constitution to force tender consciences. – Thomas Jefferson
Government is instituted to protect property of every sort…[and] conscience is the most sacred of all property. – James Madison
Security under our constitution is given to the rights of conscience. – John Jay, First Chief of U.S. Supreme Court, author of the Federalist Papers
It is beyond contemptible that an American president would attempt to do something like this. If our nation retained the moral fiber it once held when President George Washington gave his Farewell Address, this anti-American tyrant would be facing impeachment for his outright contempt for the U.S. Constitution and the liberty of the American people. As it is, we will (hopefully) have to settle for tossing his Marxist hind quarters from office later this year…while something remotely resembling the America George Washington helped build still remains.

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the party over to the so-called moderates wouldn't make any sense at all." - Ronald Reagan, Nov. 10, 1964
