The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. If `Thou shalt not covet’ and `Thou shalt not steal’ were not commandments of Heaven, they must be made inviolable precepts in every society before it can be civilized or made free. — John Adams, A Defense of the American Constitutions 1787

Rep. Allen West on National Defense

July 21, 2012   ·   By   ·   12 Comments

This half-hour video is from a recent speech at Eagle Forum by Rep. Allen West (R-FL).

West primarily discusses the practical and constitutional role of defense in the life of the United States, but also touches on other important subjects.

If a Republican administration would make use of West to educate and motivate the American people through a minimum of 2-3 public speeches around the nation every week, West would make a truly AWESOME vice president. Mitt Romney would give his campaign a tremendous boost, were he to choose West, and if a President Romney were to commission a Vice President West to remind Americans of our heritage, our form of government, and our unique principles and values, America would be well on the way to healing the cancer of Leftist Marxism that has plagued this nation for decades.

And following a Romney Administration, a West Administration could put this great nation back on the path of health and strength. I can think of no elected representative who even comes close to the trust and respect I have for West–and he’s earned it.

He had my respect…up until a year ago when he decided it was OK to vote for debt ceiling increases. And most recently, indefinite detention of citizens.
Now he’s just another D.C. chuckle-head as far as I’m concerned.

The debt ceiling increase was indeed a mistake on his part, but no one is going to get absolutely everything right. The “indefinite detention” issue is more complex than a lot of people realize, however. If you’re looking for better than Allen West, you might as well give up, because it doesn’t exist today.

Allen West would be a good choice for VP. He would be strong on the campaign trail. However, his voting record is not as conservative as some people would like nor does it completely match his rhetoric. He is only ranked 142 on the Club For Growth scorecard (which I think is a pretty good ranking system).

While I would personally prefer a conservative that walks the walk better than Representative West, I certainly could support him.
Disappointingly, Kristi Noem ranks even lower than Allen West on the Club For Growth’s scorecard.

There may be some with a better conservative record than West, but his record is still pretty good. But I don’t think you’ll find any conservatives who are better and bolder about taking the fight to the enemy than West. We need conservatives who will do more than just hold their own, and West will ram it down the throats of the Left. We’ll never get America back on track by playing defensively, and West knows how to play offense. He could teach the rest of the conservatives a lot.

I agree with you, Bob. There is a way to vote conservatively (and conservative votes is ultimately the way things get done – and UNdone) but the way you attack a known enemy is just as affective, and West is unwavering and effective like almost no one else is. He isn’t cowed by political correctness, and that plays a heck of a lot into his score in my estimate.

Bob, I have no disagreement with your comments regarding Allen West’s ablility to take the fight to the democrats. He is a strong individual and I like him a lot for that ability.

However, I do believe that his actual voting record on conservative issues is weaker than one would expect from such strong conservative rhetoric. I agree that Representative West is a stronger Conservative than a Lindsey Graham. But I really wish he had a stronger voting record so if he were to be part of a winning “R” team, we could actually count on true conservative principles being followed when they implemented policy.

I’ve only followed his votes on what I would consider the more major pieces of legislation, but on your recommendation I’ll take a closer look.

Bob, here is one more link for the Heritage Foundation rankings. It lists senators and representatives by state. In Florida, you will find that Allen West has a 69% rating while Marco Rubio has a 95% rating. West’s 69% rating is higher than Noem’s 60% rating. For whatever it is worth, Lindsey Graham (my favorite RINO to pick on) got a 72%.

I understand that I am coming across as anti-Allen West. However, please understand that is not entirely the case. I do like the guy and have actually sent a check to him. My wife is on his mailing list and thinks he is great.

Me — I just wish his actual voting record had more solid conservative footprints in it. He is a good man and a strong candidate for any political office be it as a Representative for the state of Florida or as VP. Perhaps as time goes on and Representative West has a longer voting record, it will reflect more conservative trends?

As a side note, I am not sure if you noticed in the Club For Growth, they have Steve King from Iowa listed as one of their endorsed candidates. They really like him.

Thanks for the info, SDJammer. While some might say you could be coming across as anti-West, I don’t think that’s the case. This isn’t welcome news, but you’re making your case in a balanced fashion and backing it up with facts. I still value West’s ability to articulate American values and principles, but am forced to admit that his overall record may hurt his credibility in bringing that message. I wish I knew how someone who can so passionately and competently articulate conservative/traditional American values could fall significantly short of that ideal. I’m going to try to contact West or his people to see if they can shed some light. I don’t want to be “comforted” with some whitewash, but want to give him a fair audience in case there’s something I’m missing. And hopefully, just having the question asked by someone who is on-record as a strong West supporter may provide the “encouragement” he needs to spiff up that record a bit.

Thanks for the info–and for being a regular reader!

IRS Tea Party Harassment Report Described as ‘Bombshell’

Bob Ellis

According to Richard Viguerie's Conservative HQ, a report from Attorney Cleta Mitchell, a partner in the law firm Foley & Lardner LLP, documents specifics on IRS Tea Party harassment which debunks a lot of the bull we've been fed by the IRS and the Obama Administration.

The Lawless Sheep

David Pepe

Tragically a great majority of Americans love Barack H. Obama and are oblivious to where he is leading them, for in their hearts they are just like him in one way or another. They have become godless, immoral, moral relativistic sheep of Satan's secularism and oh how they love it so.

IRS Commissioner Upset by Political Questions

Rick Manning

In an ironic twist, during former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman's appearance before the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee, he recoiled when asked about his political activities in the past. Imagine the rudeness of a member of Congress asking a witness who is embroiled in a scandal involving the targeting of the Administration’s political enemies, about his own political allegiances.

Rubio Disagreed With Himself on Amnesty

Bob Ellis

In 2010 Rubio said we can't give amnesty to the people who violated our borders and broke our laws because it wouldn't be fair to those immigrants who have gone by the rules and done things lawfully. Rubio even went to the point of stating, "Earned path to citizenship is basically code for 'amnesty." Why does Rubio now disagree with himself?
